A Former Restauranteur Finds His Way into a Resale Franchise
Steve Warres was looking for the next step in his career after owning restaurants in New York and managing multiple corporate locations in Georgia. Though franchising was a completely new industry, Once Upon A Child® caught his eye. With 30 years of business experience, Warres was intrigued by the positive benefits of franchising with one of the leading Winmark® brands.
“My wife and I were looking for the freedom of owning a business, other than a restaurant, in Cumming, GA. The franchisee opportunity was something new and challenging,” Warres said.
Why Making the Switch to Resale Was Worthwhile
As a business owner of a mom-and-pop shop, Warres was aware of the trials and tribulations associated with building a business from the ground up. The process of buying into an established franchise seemed like the most rewarding choice by comparison. Warres fell in love with the brand when he was introduced to the Once Upon A Child business opportunity. In fact, it was one of Warres’ employees in his previous role who mentioned the benefits of franchising with Winmark, and he was immediately interested.
“I researched many franchises,” explained Steve. “However, I loved the Once Upon A Child business model and the concept. As a recession-proof business that wouldn’t require me to be in the store 24/7 as I get older, it was a no-brainer.”
Warres’ wife, Beth, had worked as a second grade teacher for many years and dreamed about owning a children-focused store. After weighing the options with his wife, they decided to open their very own location in Cumming, GA. With Steve’s knowledge of business and Beth’s experience with children, the couple opened their resale franchise with the goal of providing the best customer service in the market.
Loving What They Do and Where They Do it
Before opening their store, Steve and Beth understood there was a great market in their community for a Once Upon A Child. The franchise has a prevalent presence in Georgia with 10 other locations throughout the metro area. The Warres even found a central location near a Target and Kohl’s. They noticed a lot of families shop in the area who could benefit from a children’s resale shop.
In the Warres’ store, they feature an array of strollers, seasonal clothing, and affordable boutique items. Any family can find something for their children with the large variety of clothing sizes and styles between newborn and 18 youth. Everything from lightly used clothing to brand new items such as ties, bows, socks, and tights are available for affordable prices.
The Warres built a successful business as a family by using their own knowledge and taking advantage of the Winmark business plan. They have future plans of opening their own Style Encore and Plato’s Closet in the near future as well.
